2006

The Babysitter
Third Family: Short Short
Drafted February, 2006.
I was still new to Benchworthy, Pennsylvania when I received my first commission. 'New' is a relative term with varying interpretations. Therefore, I'll make mine clear: I was 'new' inasmuch as I hadn't yet mastered the Benchworthian dialect. Though I'm told the form is closely related to English, after taking two months of remedial Benchworth I'd failed the test. My ineptitude might result in my being held back from Junior High. My name is Tina. I'm a babysitter."

"Sentimentality -- and perhaps the Nordic atmosphere, and Bardic rhythms, and exotic doctrines could spread (as Shakespeare's England fostered political plays and histories, and the Germany of Goethe favored Lyric meters, of prose and verse, de la Motte, and of Sturm und Drang) the philosophic, (crypto mythic) metaphysical movements with an enthusiasm (and Savage speculation and irrational subjectivism) (from Nature's God to Reason and Virtue to the Gray Enlightenment to Klopstock and Lessing) (Diderot or Gessner) (Rousseau, Klopstock) (comèdie larmoyante) in literature and mythology, song and ballad, forms and motifs, issues and themes; such social revelation was only felt in Human horror and Gothic medievalism."
